This may sound strange, but to Crime Scene Investigators, “There’s something peaceful...about working with the dead.” No matter how a victim’s life ended, they all have a story to tell…if somebody is willing to listen. For more than 30 years, Howard Ryan has been that guy. Most of that time, as a State Police Crime Scene Investigator.
Today, he is a Crime Scene Reconstruction Consultant, an Expert Witness, and he teaches state-of-the-art forensic techniques to law enforcement agencies worldwide.

Howard Ryan, Crime Scene Investigator (Retired)

Howard Ryan has worked 27 years as a sworn law enforcement officer, retiring as a Lieutenant from the New Jersey State Police where he commanded a Crime Scene Investigation Unit, then serving as the Chief Warrant Officer for the Morris County Sheriff’s Office. He is the owner of Highlands Forensics Investigations & Consulting where, he and his team has consulted and reconstructed crime scenes and assessed crime scene units since 2014 throughout the U.S. and abroad.

He is the creator and host of ‘Under the Yellow Tape Podcast’ and a long-time instructor for the National Forensic Academy at the University of Tennessee. Mr. Ryan is the co-owner of Crime Scene Academy, the first of its kind e-learning platform for advance law enforcement training. He is also the co-owner of Sheepdog Java Coffee Company which helps provide free training to law enforcement across the country through the Crime Scene Academy.

He is the author of ‘Overcast’ and the continuing Declan Moran series, which is the culmination of decades of crime scene investigation work that included hundreds of homicides and shooting scene investigations. Each twist and turn represent a small piece of the experiences collected through a long career as an actual practitioner.
